Better than sideline concussion screenings

There is no single gold-standard test for concussion diagnosis and recovery.

With Halos Edge®, athletes and coaches have real-time data in the moment for accurate brain injury assessment.

Current diagnosis of sports-related concussion relies solely on athlete symptoms and clinical signs that are infrequent, non-specific, and open to subjective interpretation, and in the context of elite sports on pitch-side assessments which have only limited sensitivity and specificity.

However, focusing on concussions only misses the point of how harmful the accumulation of sub-concussive impacts can be. Halos Edge® automatically reports and measures concussive and sub-concussive head impacts for a data-based approach to screening for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and risk assessment for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

Halos Edge® provides a more objective, timely and personalised diagnosis of concussion and sub-concussions at ‘pitch side’ across all ages and competencies to better inform return-to-play protocols and long-term healthcare assessment.

The heavy reliance on physical signs and clinical symptoms reporting when making a concussion diagnosis creates a conflict of interest for the athlete. The desire to want to continue playing, or the competitive pressure from teammates or coaches, can incentivise an athlete to under-report or mask their concussion symptoms [1]. Equally, some players may have received less education on concussion, leading to their lack of awareness of its signs, symptoms, and potential dangers.

Concussion symptoms can be delayed, with an onset that ranges from hours to days after the concussion-causing event. Consequently, a player who does not immediately exhibit concussion symptoms following a head impact may have a false reassurance, potentially leading them and coaches/medics to dismiss the possibility of a concussion.

By harnessing the power of monitoring and assessment with Halos Edge®, individuals can examine their own brain activity AND baseline, and track brain health trends over time.

Most wearable technologies monitor physical feedback like heart rate variability to make assumptions about focus and fatigue. But measuring brainwaves gives athletes and coaches a far more accurate view of player performance with a whole new set of data that goes beyond smartwatches and heart monitors.

Even if a player isn’t showing signs of brain injury, Halos Edge® can still pick up on cues from the brain that indicate fatigue and anxiety – meaning coaches can give players recovery time and optimise performance on the field. Generally, fatigue in sport causes performance to suffer and injury risk to be increased.
