First-hand data on grassroots attitudes to brain injury risk in sport

The Rezon Survey was developed by Rezon in partnership with the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) and Voice®  at Newcastle University to assess real-world understanding of brain injury risk, sub-concussion, and head protection in sport.

The survey targeted individuals directly involved in grassroots and youth sport decision-making, including parents, players, and coaches. Questions were designed to test both perceived confidence and actual understanding of key concepts, including concussion, sub-concussion, long-term neurological risk, and the purpose of protective headwear.

The Rezon Survey found a gap between perceived understanding of concussion and the scientific mechanisms that drive cumulative brain injury risk in sport.

World-First Insights

Rezon, Re:Cognition Health, and Kings College University are collaborating in a world-first study to demonstrate the protection for the brain provided by Rezon Halos® when worn during contact sports.

This study pushes scientific and research boundaries further than currently evidenced.

It will for the first time demonstrate how repetitive head impacts, in the course of game play and training (head-to-head, head-to-ground, head to ball, head to post) cause damage to the brain, with this being evidenced through pioneering neuro-imaging.

There will be a focus on the crucial nerve pathways within the brain, which are identified as particularly vulnerable to repetitive head trauma over time. The study will also correlate the quantitative effect of multiple linear and rotational forces to which the head is subjected to, and better understand brain tolerances of rotational forces.

This world-first study brings together the pioneering Rezon Halos® product and the true experts on brain trauma, and utilises the most developed and sophisticated brain imaging technology to give ground-breaking and game-changing insights.

Seedcorn Winners 2021

Rezon has been announced as one of five winners of The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Brain Injury MedTech Co-operative (MIC) Seedcorn Competition 2021, an annual competition that seeks to enhance the development of new medical devices, healthcare technologies, and technically dependent interventions in brain injury.

The NIHR MIC is based from the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge, and led by Professor Peter Hutchinson – Professor of Neurosurgery and Head of the Division of Academic Neurosurgery at the University of Cambridge. The NIHR is at the heart of one of the world’s largest technology clusters, and a Centre of Expertise in the development of new technologies to improve the effectiveness and quality of healthcare services in the brain injury care pathway across the NHS.

Rezon is the first ever north-east based winner of the annual Seedcorn competition which began in 2018, and has secured funding to undertake research related to athletes who wear head-worn protection having any assumed greater margin of safety and false confidence.
