Robert Sanchez’s Rugby Headguard Shows Football Still Does Not Understand Brain Protection
Robert Sanchez wore a rugby headguard as he lined up for Chelsea against Manchester City in Saturday’s FA Cup final.
The reaction was predictable. Comparisons were made with Petr Čech, Chelsea’s former number one, who wore head protection throughout the rest of his career after suffering a serious skull fracture in 2006. But this should not be treated as nostalgia. It should be treated as a warning.
Twenty years on from Čech’s injury, we know far more about brain injury in sport. We know more about rotational forces. We know more about sub-concussions. We know more about cumulative exposure. We also know that traditional rugby headguards were never designed to protect the brain.
That is why Sanchez wearing a rugby headguard matters.
A rugby headguard may reassure the crowd. It may reassure the player. It may reassure the club. But reassurance is not science. Permission to wear a product is not proof that it protects the brain. And scalp protection is not brain protection.
Football needs to understand that distinction fast.
Allowed Is Not Protective
This is the central point football keeps missing.
A sport governing body can decide whether a product is allowed in competition. That does not mean the product is legally compliant as protective equipment. It does not mean the product reduces the rotational forces associated with brain injury. It does not mean the product is aligned with the modern science of brain protection.
Governing body approval can decide whether a product may be worn under a sport’s rules; it does not set the legal standard for protective equipment, and it does not prove that a product meaningfully reduces rotational forces associated with concussion, sub-concussions and longer-term brain injury risk [1].
If a footballer is allowed to wear a rugby headguard, all that tells us is that the match rules allow it. It tells us nothing about whether the product protects the brain. It tells us nothing about whether it has been certified for the protective claim being relied upon. It tells us nothing about whether it reduces rotational force transmission during a head impact.
Football has confused “allowed” with “protective”. They are not the same thing.
Football is borrowing from rugby, but rugby headguards were never brain protection
Head-worn protection is less common in football than rugby. So when football reaches for something visible after a head injury, it borrows from rugby.
That is a problem.
Traditional rugby headguards were not designed as brain protection. They were designed to help with surface injuries; cuts, abrasions, bruising and ears. World Rugby’s own position has long separated rugby headguards from concussion and traumatic brain injury protection. World Rugby’s guidance is that their approved headgear can help prevent soft-tissue injuries to the head and ears, but is not designed to protect against concussion or traumatic brain injury [2].
That matters because Sanchez was not wearing an abstract piece of “headgear”. He was wearing a Body Armour Ventilator Rugby Headguard.
Football borrowed from a sport whose legacy head protection category has never solved the brain protection problem. Rugby headguards may cover the head. They may reduce some superficial surface injury. But the brain is not protected by padded coverage alone. The brain is protected by reducing the forces transmitted during impact, especially rotational forces.
A product designed around scalp, ear or soft-tissue protection should not be treated as brain protection.

Should Football Really Be Taking Its Brain Protection Cues From Rugby?
There is a bigger governance issue here.
Football is already under legal and medical scrutiny over head impacts. The FA has denied legal responsibility in relation to claims about brain injury risk from heading and repeated head impacts [3]. A recent inquest into the death of Gordon McQueen concluded that his dementia and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) was linked to repeated heading of a football [4]. World Rugby is also defending legal action from former players over brain injury [5].
So we have to ask a direct question.
Should football really be borrowing its head protection culture from rugby?
Rugby should be a warning, not a template. It is a sport with a long history of head impacts, legacy equipment, concussion controversy and legal defence. If football is now reaching for rugby headguards as a visual answer to head injury risk, it is borrowing from a system that has not adequately protected the brain.
That is not leadership. It is imitation without scrutiny.
If It Is Sold As Protection, It Must Be Treated As PPE
The legal point cannot be ignored.
Head protection claiming to protect the wearer is personal protective equipment. In the UK and Europe, PPE falls within the scope of Regulation 2016/425. It must meet the relevant essential health and safety requirements before it is placed on the market. In Great Britain, the same regulatory framework is enforced through UK PPE law [6].
The category matters.
Category I PPE is limited to protection from superficial mechanical injury; light scuffs, abrasions and similar surface injury. Once a product moves into claims or use connected with impact, concussion, sub-concussion or brain injury risk, the injury being addressed is no longer superficial. It is deeper. It is neurological. It is potentially life-changing.
Head protection beyond cuts and scrapes belongs in a higher risk category. That requires independent testing, certification and conformity evidence. It requires a CE/UKCA Category II PPE mark. Neither the Body Armour Ventilator Rugby Headguard worn by Robert Sanchez, nor the Canterbury headguard worn by Petr Čech, meets this safety-certification standard.
A sporting body’s permission is not a CE mark. A match official allowing a product on the pitch is not a Declaration of Conformity. A retailer describing a product as “protective” is not proof that it is certified for brain protection.
And this is the key point of concern. The Body Armour Ventilator Rugby Headguard product uses clear protective language. It describes “comfort, cooling and protection”, says the foam offers “the best protection available”, and states that it “protects major head impact zones” [7].
That language matters.
If a rugby headguard is being sold as protection, consumers are entitled to ask: protection from what? Certified by whom? Under which PPE category? Where is the Declaration of Conformity? Where is the independent evidence that it protects against the risk people think it protects against?
This is not a paperwork issue. It is a player-safety issue. It is a consumer-protection issue. It is a duty-of-care issue.
This Is Not Just Chelsea’s Problem
If this can happen at one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League, it is happening everywhere.
It is happening in academies. It is happening in schools. It is happening in grassroots clubs. It is happening wherever parents, coaches and players see an elite athlete wearing a rugby headguard and assume it must be the right thing to do.
That assumption is dangerous.
A recent brain protection survey, carried out in conjunction with UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) and Voice®, found that parents, players and coaches often recognise concussion, but far fewer understand the risks created by repeated sub-concussive impacts that do not trigger symptoms or a protocol [8].
That confusion changes behaviour.
A parent sees a professional footballer wearing a rugby headguard and thinks: that must protect the brain. A school sees the same image and thinks: that must be acceptable. A child sees the same image and thinks: that is what brain protection looks like. This all contributes to the issue of invisible brain injury in sports [9].
But if the product is designed and certified only for superficial injury, then what is being copied is not brain protection. It is a visual reassurance.

The Science Has Moved On
Modern brain protection has to start with the mechanism of brain injury.
Brain injury in sport is strongly associated with rotational motion. During impact, rotational forces cause the brain to rotate inside the skull and are strongly associated with brain injury mechanisms such as shear strain and neural tissue damage [10].
This is why traditional rugby headguards are the wrong answer to a modern brain-injury question.
A rugby headguard designed around coverage, comfort and soft-tissue protection is not designed to reduce rotational force transmission to the brain. A product can cover the head and still fail to address the mechanism most relevant to brain injury. A product can look protective and still fail to provide the protection that matters most.
The question is not whether Sanchez’s rugby headguard made him look protected.
The question is whether it was designed, tested and certified to reduce the forces that damage the brain. It wasn’t.
Virginia Tech Shows the Difference Between Padding and Brain Protection
There is now a better way to judge head-worn protection than appearance, habit or governing-body permission.

The FA Cannot Deny Responsibility While Allowing Confusion
The FA cannot treat brain injury as a legal issue in one room and a product-choice free-for-all in another.
If the organisation is denying responsibility for long-term brain injury claims, it has an even greater obligation to show leadership in the present. It should be setting a higher standard around what players, clubs, schools and parents understand by brain protection.
Instead, this weekend showed the opposite.
A goalkeeper returned to play in a rugby headguard with no CE/UKCA Category II PPE certification after a serious and recent head injury. The public conversation focused on comparisons with Petr Čech. The deeper issue was missed: elite football has once again allowed the visual language of protection to replace the science of protection.
Football cannot hide behind concussion protocols after injury while failing to challenge poor protection choices before and after injury.
Protocols identify injury after brain injury has already occurred. They do not protect the brain during impact. They do not reduce the transmission of rotational force to the brain. They do not protect the brain at the moment of collision.
If football is serious about brain health, it must move upstream. It must protect the brain in the moment the impact occurs.
Players Must Take Personal Accountability Too
This is not only a governing body issue.
Players cannot assume the club, the retailer, the governing body, or the brand has done the thinking for them. Evidence broadly suggests that they haven’t. The modern athlete has to ask harder questions:
- What is this headguard certified to protect?
- Does it carry CE and UKCA marking for the relevant PPE category?
- Does it have a Declaration of Conformity?
- Has it been independently tested?
- Does it reduce the transmission of rotational forces?
- Is it brain protection, or is it scalp protection?
That is not an unreasonable standard. It is the minimum standard when the risk is brain injury.
The same applies to parents, coaches and schools. Do not assume a product protects the brain because it is worn by a professional athlete. Do not assume a rugby headguard protects the brain because it is sold as protective. Do not assume a governing body’s permission means scientific protection.
Ask what the product is designed to protect. Ask what it is certified to protect. Ask what evidence supports the claim.
Insurers Are Waking Up Faster Than Governing Bodies
Sport should also pay attention to what insurers are doing.
The insurance market is beginning to move because brain injury risk is no longer theoretical. There is growing pressure on sport from litigation, insurance and governance as repeated head impacts become impossible to dismiss [14].
That should alarm every governing body.
When insurers start pricing risk more seriously than sport is managing risk, there is a governance problem. When clubs still rely on visual reassurance rather than certified brain protection, there is a duty-of-care problem. When parents are left to decode the difference between a rugby headguard and brain protection on their own, there is a consumer-protection problem.
Sport cannot keep pretending it has no duty of care to protect players.
The science has moved on. Sport needs to catch up.
Football Needs a New Standard
Football needs a new standard; not another role model wearing uncertified scalp protection.
The FA, top-tier clubs and elite athletes have a duty of care in the limelight. This weekend, they failed themselves and the current generation of footballers.
The issue is no longer whether a player is allowed to wear a rugby headguard. The issue is whether the product is legally compliant, scientifically relevant and genuinely designed to protect the brain.
Anything less is not good enough for elite football.
It is certainly not good enough for the children, parents, schools and grassroots players who will copy what they see.
