Why do Ice Skaters and Figure Skaters Need Head Protection?

In ice skating and figure skating, a significant head-impact risk comes from falls onto the ice. Falls can occur while learning basic skating skills, practising jumps and spins, landing technical elements, or simply losing balance or an edge. They are not limited to beginners: even experienced figure skaters can fall unexpectedly during training or competition.

When the head strikes the ice both linear and rotational acceleration cause the brain to move and rotate inside the skull. Rotational motion is particularly important in brain injury because it shears and stretches brain tissue.

Because a fall cannot always be anticipated, head protection can only provide protection when it is being worn. For figure skaters who choose to protect their head during training, consistent use of appropriate head-worn protection throughout on-ice practice protects during the unexpected falls and impacts that can occur while skating. No head protection can eliminate the risk of concussion, but reducing the forces transmitted to the head and brain during an impact can help reduce concussion and brain injury risk.

Rotection® Technology

Engineered to reduce rotational forces, which are the primary mechanism of brain injury.

Rotection® is a proprietary, nine-layered, comfortable, lightweight protective system to protect the brain across contact, collision, and combat sports. Independently tested at Virginia Tech, Halos® with Rotection® technology demonstrated up to a 61% reduction in rotational forces*. Deliberately designed to protect your brain.

Why Halos® is different.

Rezon Halos® is the only non-helmeted head worn protection to hold both CE / UKCA Category II PPE certification and a Virginia Tech 5 Star safety rating.

Conventional headgear in sport is designed to only protect from surface injury, cuts and abrasions. Halos® is different, it is brain protection.

Halos® is engineered to protect your brain by reducing the transmission of rotational forces in sub-concussive and concussive impacts. By lowering exposure to these forces, Halos® is focused on reducing neuro-inflammation and lessening the risk of triggering longer-term neuro-degenerative consequences, including CTE, motor neurone disease, and Parkinson’s disease.

FAQs

Rezon Halos® is a low-profile, head-worn protective system designed to reduce the rotational and linear forces transmitted during head impacts.

Figure skaters have traditionally had limited choices between wearing no head protection and wearing a conventional helmet. For skaters searching for a figure skating helmet because they want greater protection from head impacts, Halos® provides a different approach: head-worn protection specifically engineered around reducing the forces associated with concussion risk, while remaining lightweight, flexible and unobtrusive on the ice.

The best figure skating helmet or head protection should do more than protect against cuts and surface injury. Skaters should consider whether the protection has been independently tested, whether it reduces both rotational and linear forces during head impacts, whether it meets appropriate safety standards, and whether it can be worn without unnecessarily restricting vision or movement.

Rezon Halos® is a low-profile alternative to a conventional figure skating helmet. It has been independently tested to reduce rotational force transmission by up to 61% and linear force transmission by up to 64%, and has achieved a 5-Star Virginia Tech safety rating.

When practising jumps in figure skating, gymnastics and cheerleading, it is important to protect the brain. A figure skating helmet needs to offer credible, certified and independently tested protection, but it also needs to be suitable for the sport. It is important that the protection does not obscure vision, interfere with movement, or add unnecessary weight to the head. Rezon Halos® is the best figure skating head protection because it offers safety-certified brain protection in a sleek and lightweight design.
