Why do you protect your shins and teeth, but not your brain?

Every head impact creates rotational forces to the brain.

This is associated with the tearing of tiny blood vessels and brain cells; and over time, in the breakdown of the protective blood-brain barrier and the creation of damaging neuro-inflammation. This increases the risk of longer-term neurodegenerative consequences, including Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

CTE is an early onset-dementia that typically occurs in ages 30-50 but can occur in teenagers and is a condition almost unique to contact and collision sports players.

The Brain is Vulnerable

In sports, the brain is vulnerable to rotational forces from both concussions and sub-concussions.

Sub-concussions are small force impacts that damage brain cell function, but do not produce evident signs or symptoms of concussion – so they go unnoticed. Sub-concussions are over 500 times more common than concussions in sport.

Repeated sub-concussions impact memory and attention, suppress brain function, and contribute to later life mood and behaviour problems including CTE. The risk and severity of CTE is caused primarily by the cumulative damage of multiple sub-concussive impacts, and not by concussions.

How does Halos® protect the brain?

Halos® protects your brain from rotational forces – this is where your brain rotates within your skull on impact, and is a lot more common than you think.

And that’s the biggest issue in brain injury: the undetected damage of rotational forces from repeated sub-concussions goes unnoticed, yet they’re progressively tearing brain cells and blood vessels, damaging the protective blood-brain barrier, and causing brain inflammation.

Halos® has nine protective layers, wrapped around the most critical areas of your head. On impact, each of these layers move over each other, reducing the transmission of rotational forces to the brain. Also three specific layers deform, further reducing impact energy.

Halos® has been extensively user tested across different sports, including in rugby scrums, to optimise the silicon gripping design, and the design and ergonomics were also tested as part of CE testing.

Rezon Halos® and the N-Pro headguard differ fundamentally in both design intent and independently verified performance. Rezon Halos® is specifically engineered to reduce rotational force transmission to the brain and holds an internationally recognised Virginia Tech 5-star safety rating, indicating a high level of protection against concussion risk.

By contrast, no scrum cap or rugby helmet, including the N-Pro headguard, has publicly disclosed a 4- or 5-star Virginia Tech safety rating. While N-Pro has undergone testing using the Virginia Tech head-to-head methodology, the same peer-reviewed testing framework used to assess Rezon Halos®, its star rating has not been made public. Results of N-Pro’s Virginia Tech head-to-head methodology testing are publicly available. Overall, Rezon Halos® outperforms N-Pro.

Some specialist headgear, including Rezon Halos®, can reduce concussion risk, but only when it addresses the biomechanical forces that cause brain injury during head impacts. But no headgear can prevent concussion, because concussion is a statistical risk. Modern neuroscience and sports biomechanics research increasingly shows that concussion and many other traumatic brain injuries are driven primarily by rotational forces transmitted to the brain during head impacts.

Most traditional non-helmeted sports headgear was not designed or even safety tested to reduce these forces. Instead, traditional non-helmeted sports headgear was originally developed to reduce visible injuries such as cuts, abrasions and cauliflower ear by cushioning linear impact forces at the surface of the head.

No, because World Rugby approved headgear is padded head and ear coverings designed to protect players from ‘…only injuries that are cuts and abrasions‘ encountered when in contact with other players or the ground during play. ‘With limited impact acceleration attenuation properties, they are not intended nor expected to protect against any form of mild traumatic brain injury or skull fractures‘. (World Rugby, Regulation 12, Headgear Specification).

Halos® is brain protection.

Halos® is outside Law 4.3.g and Regulation 12 as World Rugby requires that headwear must have zones of coverage covering the crown, temple, forehead and ear areas. Halos® does not cover the crown.

Governing bodies regulate participation, they do not define the legal standard for protective equipment, and they do not decide the science of brain protection and safety testing.
