Why do you protect your shins and not your brain?

Every head impact creates rotational forces to the brain.

This is associated with the tearing of tiny blood vessels and brain cells; and over time, in the breakdown of the protective blood-brain barrier and the creation of damaging neuro-inflammation. This increases the risk of longer-term neurodegenerative consequences, including Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

CTE is an early onset-dementia that typically occurs in ages 30-50 but can occur in teenagers and is a condition almost unique to contact and collision sports players.

The Brain is Vulnerable

In sports, the brain is vulnerable to rotational forces from both concussions and sub-concussions.

Sub-concussions are small force impacts that damage brain cell function, but do not produce evident signs or symptoms of concussion – so they go unnoticed. Sub-concussions are over 500 times more common than concussions in sport.

Repeated sub-concussions impact memory and attention, suppress brain function, and contribute to later life mood and behaviour problems including CTE. The risk and severity of CTE is caused primarily by the cumulative damage of multiple sub-concussive impacts, and not by concussions.

How does Halos® protect the brain?

FAQs About Head Protection for Children

Between ages 8-12 is when peak development of the brain occurs, but the brain is still developing through the refinement and rearrangement of pathways and connections between cells until early 20s.

  • Players experiencing head impacts prior to age 12 have been found to have demonstrated worse cognitive, executive (planning, decision-making, impulse control) and new learning abilities as adults, compared to those who were at least 12 years old when they were first exposed to contact and collision sports.
  • Children and young people who sustain a concussion are at increased risk of developing mental health issues (anxiety and neurotic disorders, behavioural disorders, mood and eating disorders, schizophrenia, substance use disorder and suicidal ideation).

Protective headguards – like Halos® headbands for concussions and sub-concussions – help reduce the impact of head injuries, lowering the risk of concussions and sub-concussions.

Reducing the risks from sub-concussions is crucial. These impacts occur 500 times more frequently than concussions, and are responsible for the development of neurodegenerative diseases like CTE.

Halos® protects the brain, whereas a scrum cap/headguard protects the surface of the head from cuts/grazes and protects the ears.

So the protection choice is the brain versus the head.

There are two types of brain injury whatever the sport and level: concussion and sub-concussion.

The frequency of sub-concussions is 500x that of concussions; the forces received to the head for a sub-concussion are 2-3x less; and a player does not get any symptoms of sub-concussion. Head-to-head, ground, ball, knee, and post (etc.) impacts all create sub-concussions.

Multiple sub-concussions over the years damage brain cells and tear the tiny vessels around the nerves in the brain, creating abnormal inflammatory processes, which eventually become harmful. This is the start of the process causing CTE, whereby toxic tau protein in the brain is very gradually killing brain cells. So as brain protection, Halos® is focused on reducing sub-concussions.

It’s specifically about rotational forces on the brain. Halos® reduces rotational acceleration and therefore force by c.60%. An opportunity to reduce continual sub-concussive rotational forces by c.60% makes total sense for every player. More so, given the risk to children who start to play contact sports before age 12 and grow up to have poorer cognitive performance than their matched peers who started after the age of 12 years, then reducing as much rotational forces as possible to a child’s brain really is a key consideration as a parent, guardian, or coach.
