Brain Health Is the New Economic Advantage. Sport Is Still Treating It as Disposable.
For decades, we’ve measured physical progress in terms of speed, strength, and efficiency. Now, as artificial intelligence reshapes work, productivity, and entire industries, one truth is becoming unavoidable: the most valuable asset in the modern economy is the human brain.
According to McKinsey Health Institute, the future of economic growth depends on human capabilities that machines cannot easily replicate: complex decision-making, adaptability, emotional regulation, creativity, and learning agility. In short, brain health and brain performance are becoming the defining competitive advantage of nations, organisations, and individuals [1].
Yet while business leaders, policymakers, and economists are beginning to talk seriously about “brain capital,” sport continues to treat the brain as expendable.
That contradiction should concern all of us.
AI elevates the brain. Sport continues to expose it.
As AI increasingly automates routine and physical tasks, humans are valued for what only healthy brains can do. This makes brain health not just a medical issue, but an economic one. McKinsey’s work on human capital repeatedly highlights that productivity, resilience, and long-term performance are rooted in cognitive and emotional function.
And yet, from childhood onwards, sport systematically exposes the brain to repeated, preventable damage.
Every head impact in sport involves rotational forces that cause the brain to rotate inside the skull. These forces shear brain cells and blood vessels, triggering neuro-inflammation. The majority of this damage does not come from one dramatic high force hit or concussions, but from hundreds or thousands of smaller force, symptomless impacts known as sub-concussions. These accumulate damage to the brain over time, degrading memory, focus, emotional regulation, and behaviour [2].
In an economy increasingly dependent on brain function, this is not just a health oversight. It is a societal failure.

Prevention beats productivity loss. The economics are obvious.
McKinsey and others have made the economic case for prevention repeatedly: investing early to protect health yields far greater returns than managing decline later. Brain health is no exception.
Lost productivity from cognitive impairment, mental health issues, and neurodegenerative disease carries an enormous societal cost. Yet in sport, we continue to prioritise action and detection of brain injury after, rather than protection before damage occurs.
Concussion protocols, head injury assessments, and return-to-play rules all operate after the brain has already been injured. Measurement tells us something went wrong; it does nothing to stop or reduce it from happening again, and again, and again.
From an economic perspective, this is backwards.
If we accept that brain performance underpins future work, learning, and innovation, then protecting the brain; particularly in youth, during key developmental years; should be non-negotiable.

Sport is out of step with science, economics, and reality
Sport has always protected what it can see. Shins. Teeth. Scalps. The brain has been different; hidden, misunderstood, and often dismissed until symptoms become impossible to ignore.
But the science is no longer ambiguous [3]. Repeated head impacts damage the brain. Rotational forces are the primary mechanism. Sub-concussions are the dominant exposure. And the damage accumulates across a lifetime, but starting in childhood.
This isn’t about banning sport. Sport is vital for physical, social, and emotional health. But progress means evolving with evidence. Just as we accepted seatbelts, ski helmets, sunscreen, and protective equipment in other domains once the risk was understood, we now face the same moment for brain protection in sport.
Why protection must evolve

The question is no longer whether we should protect the brain in sport.
It’s why we never accepted not doing so.
